Govardhan Puja is also known as Annakut Puja. On this day sustenance made of grains like wheat, rice, curry made of gram flour and verdant vegetables is cooked and offered to Lord Krishna.
More often than not Govardhan Puja day falls following day after Diwali Puja and it is praised as the day when Lord Krishna vanquished God Indra. Here and there may be one day crevice in the middle of Diwali and Govardhan Puja.

In Maharashtra, that day is praised as Bali Pratipada or Bali Padva. The day recognizes triumph of Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, over King Bali and consequent pushing of Bali to Patal Lok (the underworld). It is trusted that because of aid given by Lord Vamana, Asura King Bali visits the Prithvi Lok from the Pataal Lok on this day.
Most of the time Govardhan Puja day harmonizes with Gujarati New Year day, which is praised on Shukla Paksha Pratipada of Kartik month. Contingent upon beginning time of Pratipada Tithi, Govardhan Puja festivities should be possible one day before Gujarati New Year day.
